The Home of ST HUGO™ celebrates its 1st birthday

The Barossa Valley’s home of St Hugo celebrated its first birthday in style on Friday, 22 September with the exclusive Pure Cabernet event that marked 12 months of awards, accolades and the biggest evolution for the wine since its first vintage in 1980.

Over the past year, St Hugo has won several leading restaurant awards including Best New Regional Restaurant at the Restaurant and Catering Awards South Australia 2017 and Gourmet Traveller Wine Awards 2017 - Best Cellar Door with Food.

St Hugo takes a different approach to food and wine matching, with each dish created by Executive Chef, Mark McNamara in collaboration with Chief Winemaker Daniel Swincer to ensure that it perfectly complements St Hugo wines. Mark and his award-winning team work with over 100 ingredients to balance the flavours of every dish to enhance the individual characteristics of each wine.

The evolution continues at St Hugo, following a new development grant from the South Australian Government. The winery now includes a recently opened courtyard grill perfect for Spring and Summer celebrations.

St Hugo was created to celebrate the legacy of Hugo Gramp, the visionary and former Managing Director of Gramps & Son’s winery from 1920 to 1938. The home of St Hugo just a year old overlooks the Barossa ranges and St Hugo vineyard, reflects the power and elegance of this influential wine magnate who felt a great sense of connection with Australian terroir.

St Hugo Executive Chef, Mark McNamara says ““For the past year, our restaurant team has enjoyed the rewarding challenge of developing an entire and ever evolving range of original dishes for our menus to specifically showcase each individual St Hugo Wine. I’m extremely proud of the results we have delivered and thrilled at the success and awards we have garnered for the home of St Hugo in the Barossa in just 12 months.

As we further expand our collection, we continue to create more new and exciting dishes, further honouring the work of our winemakers and the legacy of Hugo Gramp, cementing St Hugo’s reputation as a unique home for fine wine as well as a luxury dining destination for visitors from around the world”.

St Hugo Chief Winemaker, Dan Swincer says “It’s been a pleasure this past year to see a wine as distinctive and recognised as St Hugo have the home it deserves in the Barossa, which pays homage to the legacy of one of Australia’s most prestigious winemakers.

Our recent additions to the collection including St Hugo The Last Letter Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 and St Hugo’s first white wine, a Riesling demonstrate the potential of the St Hugo collection and home in offering fine-wine connoisseurs an exclusive Barossa fine-wine experience.”

The birthday celebrations on Friday night at Pure Cabernet saw wine connoisseurs and lovers of fine dining indulge in a six-course degustation of St Hugo’s most popular Cabernet pairings, that were popular favourites from the past year’s menus.
